"I" Swatter




A while back, I saw the idea to swat sight words from School Time Snippets and planned to use it with my boys for our insect unit.  As I prepped for the week, I decided to let my two year old in on the fun too!

She is starting to show a lot of interest in letters and letter sounds, so I am trying to give her letter of the week type activities.  This week is "I is for Insect," so instead of using a fly swatter, she got to use an "I" swatter to swat letter I's.

I just used some sticky tack to stick one "I" card onto the swatter, and spread out the rest of the "I's" out  for her to swat.


As she swatted away, I sang "The I says /i/, the I says /i/.  Every Letter makes a sound, the I says /i/" (to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell, ala Leapfrog Letter Factory).

After the song, I called out the letter name and sound as she swatted a card.  Each time she hit one, she said, "I got it!" and put the card on the plate.

She had a blast playing this game!

  1. This sounds like such a fun game for learning the letters...although my daughter would probably end up hitting me with the fly swatter instead!!

  5. Someone I follow had pinned this activity and I had to stop over to check it out. This is a great idea. Thanks for sharing. My girls know that song well, so this would be great for the younger ones who don't already know their letters.
